Homemade isotonic drinks: hydrate like an athlete...
Have you ever had that moment in the middle of summer when you drink glass after glass of water, yet still feel sluggish, tired, and a little lightheaded? No, it's not the rosé from the night before. It's simply your body lacking electrolytes. And that's where isotonic drinks come in — those magical liquids you thought were reserved for athletes in tight shorts.
Spoiler: they're for everyone. And best of all, you can make them yourself, with natural ingredients, in less than 15 minutes.

What exactly is an isotonic drink?
The word "isotonic" sounds scary. It sounds scientific, almost medical. Yet, the concept is disarmingly simple.
An isotonic drink is a liquid whose concentration of mineral salts and sugars is very close to that of your own bodily fluids — your blood, your plasma. In other words, it's a drink that your body immediately recognizes as "its own" and therefore absorbs much faster than plain water.
It generally contains:
-
Water — the base, obviously
-
Electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium
-
A small amount of carbohydrates — for energy
-
Sometimes vitamins or plant extracts — for pleasure and benefits
But why isn't water enough?
Good question! And the answer will surprise you.
When you sweat in the summer heat (or after a workout, or simply because you carried groceries up three flights of stairs), you don't just lose water. You also lose essential minerals:
-
Sodium — essential for your body's water balance
-
Potassium — for your muscles and heart to function properly
-
Magnesium — for your nervous system and muscles
And when these minerals are lacking, your body sends you alarm signals:
- Unexplained fatigue
- Muscle cramps
- Difficulty concentrating
- Headaches
- General malaise
Do you recognize these sensations? These are often symptoms of partial dehydration — not a lack of water, but a lack of electrolytes. Drinking more water isn't always enough. You need to rebalance.

Who are isotonic drinks for?
Isotonic drinks have long been associated with high-level athletes. But in reality, they are useful for everyone in the following situations:
-
During and after physical exertion — sports, intense gardening, moving house...
-
In hot weather — when you sweat without even moving
-
After a long day at work — stress and concentration also lead to mineral loss
-
In case of general fatigue — to gently restart your system
-
During convalescence — your body needs to rebalance
The problem with commercial isotonic drinks
Take a look at the labels of isotonic drinks sold in supermarkets. You'll often find: artificial colors, synthetic flavors, added sugars in large quantities, preservatives...
These are all ingredients your body would gladly do without. And frankly, paying €2 for a bottle of blue fluorescent liquid is not great.
The good news? Making your own natural isotonic drink is simple, quick, and delicious.
Recipe 1 — The Hibiscus-Mint Isotonic
Our summer favorite recipe. Beautiful, fresh, natural, and effective.
Ingredients:
-
1 liter of water
-
1 to 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers
-
A good handful of fresh mint
-
1 to 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
-
Juice of half a lemon or half a lime
-
A pinch of salt (Himalayan pink salt or unrefined salt — source of sodium)
-
Optional: a few slices of fresh ginger
Preparation:
-
Steep the hibiscus flowers in simmering water for 10 to 15 minutes
-
Filter and let cool
-
Add lemon juice, honey, and a pinch of salt
-
Add fresh mint and ginger if using
-
Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving over ice

Why does it work?
This drink works thanks to the synergy of its ingredients. Hibiscus, rich in antioxidants, also provides cardiovascular support and a magnificent ruby red color. Mint offers an immediate sensation of freshness while aiding digestion, while lemon provides vitamin C and a naturally balancing acidity. A pinch of salt completes the recipe by providing sodium, an essential electrolyte for rehydration. Finally, honey plays the role of a natural and fast energy source. The result is a drink that is both refreshing, slightly tart, and particularly effective for rehydration, not to mention its irresistible visual appeal that makes you want to photograph it before even tasting it.
Recipe 2 — The Express Isotonic with Natural Syrup
No time to make an infusion? Here's the ultra-fast version, perfect for after sports or busy days.
Ingredients:
-
1 liter of still or slightly sparkling water
-
3 to 4 tablespoons natural fruit syrup (raspberry, cherry, elderberry, aronia, blueberry...)
-
A pinch of unrefined salt
-
Juice of half a lemon
-
A few ice cubes
Preparation:
Mix everything in a large carafe. It's ready. Seriously.
Why are our natural syrups perfect for this?
Our traditional fruit syrups and our vitamin C-enriched syrups contain no artificial preservatives or colors. They naturally provide fruity sugars for energy, antioxidants depending on the fruits chosen, and for our enriched syrups, a good dose of vitamin C — an additional asset for summer vitality.
👉 Elderberry syrup, for example, provides natural flavonoids in addition to a delicate and floral taste.
👉 Aronia syrup is one of Europe's richest fruits in antioxidants.👉 Raspberry syrup enriched with vitamin C combines gourmet pleasure and well-being in a single glass.
Just add your pinch of salt and lemon juice — and you have a homemade isotonic in 30 seconds flat.

The golden rules of good summer hydration
Some simple tips to stay well-hydrated all summer long:
-
Drink before you're thirsty — thirst is already a sign of mild dehydration
-
1.5 to 2 liters of liquid per day minimum in summer, more if you sweat
-
Vary the pleasures — water, cold herbal tea, homemade isotonic, fruit infusion... your body will be more inclined to drink if it tastes good!
-
Avoid sugary sodas — they make you thirsty rather than hydrate you
-
Coffee and alcohol dehydrate — always compensate with a large glass of water
In summary
Isotonic drinks are not just for marathon runners. They are simply intelligently formulated beverages to help your body rehydrate quickly and efficiently — by replacing not only lost water but also essential minerals.
And the best version? The one you make yourself, with natural ingredients, without artificial colors or preservatives. An hibiscus infusion, a little mint, a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon — and you have a drink worthy of the best athletes... to enjoy peacefully in your garden.
